Fun fact: I’m playing Tactics Advance on my OG Wii U (Wind Waker special edition, to be specific) . In 2022 when Nintendo announced that the eShop was going the way of the Dodo, I made a few eleventh hour purchases, FFTA included. Why? Well, simply put: GBA emulation on the Virtual Console is very good. Plus, I like the limited portability of the GamePad for in-bed gaming sessions. I also assumed—correctly—that Square wasn’t going to do anything with Tactics Advance in the coming years, so I wanted to nab what was/is the best version of the game before it disappeared.

Over the next few days I’ll be eulogizing the Wii U, drawing attention to its unique features that I like, starting with: the Pro Controller. While I’m fond of the Switch Pro Controller, I think it’s predecessor has it beat: it’s lightweight, ergonomic and has wildly good battery life. It’s also got a killer D-pad. What’s not to love?
